One of many different tokens and medals that I recently
found in a box with other coins etc.

1. Classified as a token ?
2. Normal die position medal not coin orientation ?
3. 90 degree die axis rotation common on these ?
4. VF grade or better ?
5. Approx. value if any ?

Images are scans, so not that great. Scans taken
as if token was in the medal position not coin.

Thanks

The token you have is classified as a Civil War token. Fuld # assigned to it is 700C-3a and it is a rarity 3 (500 - 1,999 of this token are estimated to exist). My personal Charnley token is minted in the "coin" style, w/ the obverse 180 degrees opposite the reverse. Not sure of the 90 degree reverse, but errors did occur quite frequently w/ the Civil War tokens & are very prevalent. I would say yours is in the F/VF range, and is worth $15 - $20 or there about

Here's mine...

Thank you for the info. Not a bad find I guess then.
I noticed your coin also has what appears to be a die chip
near the center of the "C" like on mine. Unless that was part
of the die design. I personally do not collect these so maybe
a member may be interested in it. I have other tokens etc. that I will post as I go along.

Indian1,

I think it's an awesome find...

The little dot you referred to is not a die chip. It's from the process when the planchets were made. They are faced from outside to inside, and the dot is where the cutting tool finished. On some planchets, you can see circular lines on the planchet from being faced flat.

I'm sure that there are many CW token collectors here on the CCF would be interested in what you have if you decide to sell them

Sorry for the poor pictures, but here are my 2 Charnley tokens. The leaves on the Union side of the tokens are slightly different.

Does anybody know how many varieties of this there are?

The Second Edition of U.S. Civil War Store Cards, by George and Melvin Fuld lists a total of 39 varieties of the Charnley tokens. This includes all designs on all metals.

The newly released CWT book by Bowers is a great resource and quite reasonably priced, considering all the info therein. The Charnley pieces are discussed in the book.
