I am leaning towards these being "Chrome Die" produced coins. IF they are proofs then they are most certainly "Impaired Proofs" I have a couple that look like these and they are NOT proofs but Chrome Die coins .

Here is a 1954 chrome die coin and is what I am basing this opinion on . This coin has perfectly polished fields

Yeah they're struck from chrome plated dies, certainly not proof strikes. I told the seller about the threepence already, he said it was ex Downies as a proof. I find this hard to believe.

I vaguely remember that one of these types of coins slipped under the radar of one of the major TPG's and got a proof designation at one time. I cannot remember if it was a 3d or 6d coin tho

Both NGC and PCGS have slabbed a number of 1954 sixpence as proofs, I see the population numbers dwindling so they're buying them in where possible.

I once saw a '51 PL zac that looked to have polished fields, but not cameoed.
I have a gem '51 zac myself, but it ain't got polished fields.

The Chrome plated Die coins DO tend to have a "Proof Like: field on them ( the scan of my coin doesn't do it any justice at all) and they DO look like a proof coin Sel. This thread has prompted me to think about adding this anomaly to the ACF "Wiki" page to explain the difference between proof and chrome plated die coins . These have fooled NGC and PGCS in the past and the more information we "Mere Mortals" have the better equipped we are at picking the differences out IMHO

I have bought things from the seller and have found him knowledgeable and trustworthy. The photos certainly don't look like proofs but are we perhaps reading too much into one fairly low resolution photo?

I've already informed him of it, if he was genuinely knowledgeable and trustworthy he'd take down the listings. It looks like someone has already sent back the threepence: http://www.ebay.com/itm/141083412390
