Hi,

I business associate of mine just purchased a 1997 $200 Gold Haida coin. I havent actually seen the coin because it is housed in its original mint packaging and that package has a clear plastic shrink wrap around the white cardboard box.
I weighed the box and it is 149.6 grams. I have a 1997 $200 Haida coin as well minus the so called shrink wrap and its weight is 145.5 grams. There is no way that the shrink wrap plastic weighs 4.1 grams.

Questions

1. Did the mint put shrink wrap plastic on any gold product back in the 90s?

2. Does the 4 gram differance in weight cause any concerns here?
Personally, I would just open it however it is not mine to do so.

Does the weight you listed for your coin include the white cardboard box?

The coin+packaging weight you mention sounds fine to me.

That's a nice coin.....did you zero out the scale before weighing? I doubt very much someone has been ripped off 4 grams....Did you weigh with same scale at same time? It may be the margin of error in a poorer quality scale. Obviously not one used by coke dealers.

I've had one of my Canada bear coins from 2000 come shrink wrapped so I wouldn't worry about it. It seems they did that at times.

My Haida , coin + COA + Clamshell case and White outer box = 145.5
Associates Haida Coin + COA + Clamshell case + White outer box and clear shrink wrap plastic= 149.6

I used the same scale and calibrated it as well several times.
Its a very accurate scale and has been very reliable.

Maybe they included some extra paper in the box (like a Gifted To card) or padding that's been removed from yours?
