Had to close the link before I started crying over the cleaned coins that were once beautifully original.
I'd rather make it myself so as to obtain coins appealing to me, but it would be interesting to see if this sells and at what price.

I like that 7070 layout.
Wonder why the "last" 7070 left out the large cent varieties that were listed in this one?
I agree most of the coins look subpar.
I'll take my 7070 set anyday although some of mine are cleaned or holed but I found each and every one which is the fun of the set.

Not really impressed but its a cool collection. But a bunch of them are cleaned/dipped. I would stay away from it..even though I dont think you wanted to buy it anyway ;)

I wouldn't pay more than face for it due to all the cleaned coins.

macmercury - with those pics alone (he wasted one on clad coinage, left the plastic over keys on another), I doubt anyone could make an informed bid. It's quite an accomplishment filling all the holes on a 7070 with the gold page - no one can take that away from the seller!

How does one tell exactly "when" a cleaned coin was "once original and beautiful"?
There are some dipped specimens in my 7070, and as I can find suitable replacements, I swap 'em out ... but as a rule, if they're not overdipped to the point of being dull and pasty looking ... it doesn't bother me in the least. "Polished" coins, on the other hand, really are a turn off for me. I just replaced my 1859 Indian head because it had been "thumbed"...probably decades ago, and that treatment, a coin just never recovers from unless you're willing to lose couple grades carrying it in your pocket with a bunch of other circulated coins. A dipped coin (silver) can recover beautifully. I'm not at all convinced that the big TGPs always spot a high end silver coin that's been dipped and re-toned. It depends upon whether the coin wasworthy of dipping in the first place. Most are not worthy.
Just my opinion, but folks have gotten ridiculously picky about the whole thing IMO. Its a swinging pendulum ... maybe it will never swing back ... but it was common practice to clean coins early on.That's why bust half dollars with original surfaces are so rare. It was considered "caring" for the coins way back when.

I have a local dealer that he does dip a few of his coins, but he knows 'how to do it', not over dipping it and still has most of the luster remain, most wouldn't even know the coin was ever dipped. Chance, I agree some dips are done so well that TPG wouldn't even noticed.

In the end, it's just a coin- a small piece of metal that was labeled as "precious" long, long ago. Don't get me wrong. This hobby is great, and I love coin collecting. I just don't ever want to lose perspective on the whole thing.
