Picked this one up raw for $22.

Have this in hand now, there is absolutely no indication
of any cleaning after close inspection with my loupe.

Any thoughts on how this type toning occurs?

Any opinions on, grade? Learning more about these,
I'm calling it VF30, a little more detail than the other
1893 I posted recently.

Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks for looking!

VF ish. Worth melt to $12 or so imo. $22 is quite exorbitant in this grade. You can get a nice MS coin in the $30-$35 range if you are patient.

Tough crowd.. A beauty in hand, I've done worse..

Has a nice gold patina that doesn't show well in the pic.

Quite a bit of wear on Columbus' hair, unfortunately.
The reverse is better.
I would have to agree that $22 was a bit too much to pay.
Still, in an absolute sense, that is not a big loss.

It's better to overpay on a double digit coin than a 3 or even 4 digit coin. Consider it a lesson learned.
I bought a Au-Bu one at a pawnshop for $20. (they were selling all of the columbian halves for $20 G-BU)

Yeah, I agree with 35 or so. I plucked a 40 out of my dealers junk for $8.50 on Friday... better deals to be had.

Seriously? You guys are breaking my kahonas because
I paid a few bucks too much.. Just happened to really like
the look of this one, nothing more.. (lousy pics, sorry).

Funny, was thinking not that long ago I would buy
Peace dollars in lots and keep the better ones, then
give the others away as a tip or to friends as pocket
pieces. Many folks had never seen one.

'Course can't do that anymore with the price of silver
nowadays, but suprising how often someone comes up to me
now beaming and pulling a well worn Peace dollar out and
saying "remember this one you gave me? Still have it!"

All is well in the promotion of the sport, I'm not in it for the money..

Not so much.
Just offering an honest opinion. If you just want confirmation and feel good statements on your purchases you have come to the wrong place.
EVERONE here has made mistakes.
NOBODY here would intentionally offend. BUT we will be honest.

You asked for thoughts, you got thoughts. If you don't want to hear commentary on the price, don't list the price. See the recent two threads I posted, one for the SLQ and the other for the '42 WLH? I gambled and got burned on the coins, and I know it... so you don't see me listing a price because I don't want nor need to be told I overpaid... I know I did, it's a risk I took.

The reality is that this forum is focused on grading, and grading directly reflects upon the value of the coin being graded. Every time somebody issues a grade on a coin, they're indirectly assessing it's valuation in their mind. There should always be a correlation between grade and cost, and when that correlation breaks down, people will mention it, because it seems off to them.

Haha, no offense taken here, and wasn't trying to give any out. Believe me I've done worse..

Was more interested in how the toning occured..
Here's a a little better picture now that I have it in hand,
The coin actually looks like this, the sellers' pics were washed out a little. It has a very gold tone to it.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Some like toning, some don't.

I have seen a dealer dip a coin to improve it's saleability. Diplomatically, when I asked him if he liked it better after a quick dip, he declined to answer, except to say that in this case, his own opinion was not important.

Probably one way to get an honest answer on this one would be to conduct a poll. Just think about the question to be asked and the options provided.
