I'm on a pretty big budget but still want some quality coins. What kind do you think I could get?

Pretty big budget ? Where to begin ? For a limited to bigger budget, I think that I might like to start putting together a MS64 Peace dollar set.

Very odd question? If you are on a "pretty big budget", I think you can "get" the "kind" you want.

A Type Set will get you started and then you can see which ones you "care" for.

I think the OP meant he was "seriously constrained by budget" ... and I know what that's like. You can buy lots of things on ebay at prices way under any kind of street value. It requires patience, or if you prefer, diligence. Certainly not the deal of the century, but I bought a nice 1923 Peace dollar on ebay a few days ago for $16.25 including postage. I also bought an 1882 Shield nickel in EF-AU for just shy of 30 dollars. Or how about 3 AU V nickels for less than $14.57 including postage? I nabbed those about 2 weeks ago. The trick with watching for deals is to bracket your price range when searching ebay. If you've only 30 dollars to spend ... bracket your inquiry to include only listings from.01 to 25.00. There's no point in looking at anything priced any higher than what you have to spend. If you must go to a local coin dealer ... you'll end up buying junk out of the "cull box" if you're really constrained by budget. Chance

Junk silver can have some great deals in it. I'd go to your local dealers, shop around... explain you collect on a tight budget and want to look through their junk silver... find a dealer that is willing to let ya search it and pick out nicer coins or rarer dates if you find 'em. I've probably spent around $2k on junk silver over the past year, but without a doubt, I could double my money if I sold everything.

I rely heavily on ebay because where I live ... there's just one dealer. He only wants to cultivate a clientele of well heeled clients. Ask him about junk silver and he'll look at you like you're from Mars. If you want MS64 Walker ... he's the guy. I've been there once and was left with an impression so cold that I'll never have a reason to return. He may be dead by now. That was maybe 10 years ago. Chance

Chance, unfortunately, that's how most dealers are. I'm lucky enough to have three good dealers in my area that let me pick their junk. One weekly, one every other week, and the other... whenever I roll around. Dealers that cater to the lower-end clientele can make some good money if the area they live in is dense enough to support it, and if they work hard to establish a reputation as fair, affordable, and knowledgeable. However, there will always be more money in the higher end of the market, it's just the way things go.

Build your knowledge and library first. Nothing slaughters a collector quicker than an unfocused pile of coins. As my Mentor often said "Specialize and Intensify"
