So, as I assemble my commemorative type set, I usually get my next coin by setting my sights on a commemorative that I'm currently interested in, and whose price is an achievable goal. So it will be, "Ooh, I need to get me a California next," or after a successful season of ebay, "I've got enough money to pick up a Gettysburg, time to look for one." Well, I wasn't really on the lookout for this coin, but I found a very attractive example at a nice price. This coin looks great in hand - the field are smooth and beautiful. It's blaze white. The guys at the local shop grade it MS-63. Take a look:

63 seems about right but need better pictures to tell for sure.

No idea with the grade. But, that is a beautiful coin.

Lovely coin with a great history and story behind it ... well done. Based on your images I believe MS63 is a bit low for his example ... I see a few chatter marks on Ellinor Dare lower dress folds ... but the fields seem pristine. I'm going MS65 pending larger photographs that say otherwise ... always difficult to judge technical grade without the coin in hand. About your set ... are you going for a complete 50 coin type set? Raw or certified? Simply curious about your goals and where this lovely coin fits into them. David

Very nice! I also think this one would likely do better than "63" if professionally graded. How is the luster?

The luster in hand is fantastic. It's what drew me to the coin.
Nickelsearcher -- you asked about my set. I am filling a 50-coin Dansco type set, so they are raw. I have bought a few slabbed ones and cracked them out for my album. I consider this my "20-year set" that will take a long time to complete, but will give me something to work on while I'm having trouble finding other coins I'm looking for (like early branch-mint quarters in AU or better!!). I love the silver commems. They are great designs (that are almost high relief when compared to today's stuff) that a lot of serious collectors are barely aware of.
I'm trying to complete the set in untoned coins that are MS.

The larger photos and your references to the luster have me convinced a top TPG would easily place this coin in at least an MS65 holder. It compares well to my PCGS MS66/CAC example and could likely attain that technical grade. On the reverse there is the previously noted chatter at the lower folds of Ellinor Dare dress, plus a bit of rim scuffing at 3:00 ... the fields are remarkably pristine less the one bag scuff to the right of the ship at 3:00. The obverse shows a bit more chatter ... but nothing terribly distracting. The largest hit I can see is adjacent to the 1 in the date ... and that is hardly a prime focal area. Outstanding coin indeed specksynder. I salute your goal of a complete MS type set. I traveled that same journey over many years and completely agree that this is a wonderful series underappreciated for it's beauty and history by the larger numismatic community. Best of wishes as your collection grows ... I look forward to your next example. David

Very nice! For what it is worth, the lost colony of Roanoke was featured on a recent episode of Sleepy Hollow.
