This dot appears on approx. 20% of all 1858 20 cents. It's position never changes. It is half way between the A of REGINA and the big dot--- giving an effect of a satellite buzzing a planet. What does change is the size of the satellite---from minute to quarter of the size of the big dot. Does this qualify as a variety if it is so consistent? Edited by lambecolin 11/04/2013 5:52 pm

Be aware of miniscule dots----the coin of Scotts Coins does have the micro dot in the same place as all the others. The smaller dots sometimes cannot be seen because of the photo lighting glare. What does differ about these dots are the size of them.

I think that Scott is spoofing us again,...with another "tricky-dicky" coin...

Now I am really curious about seeing the coin from the Noble auction in person, if there is a dot on that one it must be pretty small. Auction viewing is in two weeks so I can report back then.

Mine has a very tiny dot, hardly visible through magnification....earlier state die chip maybe

Yes---I can see the reason as an earlier state die chip-----BUT why do all coins have that pit mark on the die ? I thought back in the day these dies only lasted 30,000 strikes --- so all 24 dies had the same pit imperfection? Seeing zonad's coin---his pit is in a different place----indicating 2 different dies at least ?

After seeing Zonad's example here...I can truly say..."Now that's an amazing piece".....

Looking closer, the dot does appear to be in the right place. What we thought was a dot was a spot in the toning.
