You have to read this: http://thegrio.com/2013/11/03/the-n...ollectibles/

Rare coins provide numerous financial benefits to investors. Consider the following:

*There are no forms to fill out when you buy or sell investment rare coins.
*They can be easily traded and gifted.
*There is no annual dividend tax to pay because coins do not pay dividends.
*The capital gains on your rare coins can only be taxed at time of liquidation.

Rare coins have entered a new renaissance with thousands of new collectors entering the market and vying for a limited number of rare coins.

I saw that headline earlier and I still have to read the article. However if one of the selling points of 'investing' in coins is "There is no annual dividend tax....."... that's not a great selling feature to convince me! Sheesh. Say I earned $10,000 in dividends and had to pay some tax on it and be left with $7,500 (or whatever the #s would be)...yeah that'd be awful having to pay that tax and still keep $7500 in my pocket instead of coins sitting on my shelf that will hopefully be rare enough to earn big capital gains (which technically you are supposed to pay tax on anyway). Don't get me wrong I love the coins I have but to view them as a great investment would be unwise.

I don't think they mean the modern NCLT releases though. Mintage over a few hundred is just too high to be considered rare.

Flawed logic aside, it has nothing to do with NCLT or Canada. It's an American opinion piece about rare coins.

I laughed at this "Celebrities including basketball star Dennis Rodman, hockey icon Wayne Gretzky, actors Jack Black and Nicole Kidman, Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss and film director Penny Marshall invest in coins." Who cares what these people invest in. Yup, I'm taking my investment lead from the Worm and Laverne.

I agree with you as to it being an 'opinion' piece. However I would hope that the people who are listed have all hired some reasonably expensive and savvy investment types to help diversify their portfolios and THOSE are the people who see rare coins as a part of that strategy while the big banner names just go along for the ride. And maybe enjoy bragging about their collections along the way....

Plus the author is a rare coin dealer so has a vested interest in talking up the idea!
