My coin store has one of the coins I'm looking for in their 1/2 price bin. It's a 1913S Type 1 Buffalo nickel. It is graded at About Good. I was excited to see it but I'm worried because I used a magnifying glass and I really can't read the last digit of the date. I'm in no way saying he's trying to pull a fast one. He's been great about answering all of my questions and helping me find stuff. Besides the date the coin looks fine for me and I think the price was $6. RedBook says it's $38 in G4. My question is whether you should ever consider a coin which has date identification problems like this one. Or should you only buy those which have dates which are clearly identifiable without a microscope?

Is the 13s Type 1 a straight mound or rounded mound? Maybe you can tell by that?

Most of the time, a date should be present but this is one of those coins where a date is not necessary. All you need is a mintmark for positive ID. If it has a raised mound, it has to be a 1913 T1. Standing Liberty quarters from 1917 are another that can be identified without a date. $6 for an almost dateless 1913S T1 is a pretty good deal
