I was playing with my metal plating kit and no matter how long I tried plating my BU 2001P coins, they would not plate. I even tried burning the coin by keeping the wand on the coin for 2 minutes straight. No change in colour.

How does the composition differ from UNC coins? There's obviously a difference...is the coin coated in a clear coat of plastic or something for extra lustre?

According to Charlton 2013 Vol 1 pg xiii - "The steps in manufacture of both these coins are very close. Business strike coins are now produced at the Winnipeg mint, while coins produced for uncirculated set are struck at the Ottawa mint. The dies are identical with the exception that those used to produce uncirculated coins for sets are polished, the planchets are of a higher quality, the rate of striking is slower, and finally, the coins are removed from the press by hand."

While it says 'higher quality' planchets it doesn't mention anything about them having a different composition. Are your circulation coins you plated 2001P or 2001? 2001 is pure nickel while 2001P is steel plated with copper then nickel.
