Thanks to some excellent advice here and a very
understanding seller I was able to return my previous
1832 small letters CBH (cleaned, artifically re-toned)
and obtain another one..

Care to guess the grade? (PCGS)

Of the 23 die varieties known of the 1832 Half Dollars,
only one (Overton 101) has what is called the "Large Letters" reverse.
This die break is always present and, when it gets even
bigger, it becomes the O-101a subvariety.

It is unknown if the first O-101 coin struck had the die break.
There may be Large Letter coins out there with no die break.

(Thought this might be a O-101a later stage die break).

My guess is VF-35. Looks like a pretty big die break on the reverse!

Characteristic of the O-101 variety. I think this one's at the stage they call O-101a, due to the advanced development of the crack. It's more common than the earlier states. Believe I'll give this one VF-35 but 40 wouldn't surprise me.

I too was leaning toward 40. The O101 and 101a are the only 2 out of 23 varieties with large letters. Usually, when the RedBook shows large and small letter comparisons, they show pics of "STATES" but for the 1832 they show the wing with the die break.

Here's hoping that you jump into https://goccf.com/t/160542 to show your CBHs. If you have anything from 1817 or prior, today is the day to show them. Our GeneralissiMoe does allow us to play catch up if need be.

Conservatively graded, which is a good thing.
