Continuing my occasional posts on comparison between circulated and mint state coins in the classic silver commemorative series.
The topic of this post is the 1936 Elgin Illinois Centennial Half Dollar.
Note that I salute valued CCF member commems for the deep and insightful postings already on the history behind this coin ... much better than I could ever do with my current knowledge.

In that regard I will offer a minimum history and proceed to the comparison photos ..
Net mintage was 20,105 coins ... all distributed to collectors at $1.50 each ... with El Paso, TX dealer L.W. Hoffecker in charge ... he of the notorious 1936 Spanish Trail.
Today the Elgin is easily found in high MS state ... despite the low mintage ... most collectors of the day in 1936 saved their examples.
Truly circulated examples are however another challenge completely ... it's nearly impossible to find an Elgin today in honestly circulated condition.
Elgin Half Dollars for comparison ... hopeful that my poor photography skills are sufficient to convey the essence of these coins ...
1936 Elgin PCGS MS65/CAC
1936 Elgin Half Dollar Honestly circulated ... my best guess is VG10 ... raw coin.

Tremendous circulated coin ... a lifetime find ... and as previously noted no clue how it came to be ... such stories and history are what make this challenge such a great numismatic hunt.
Thanks again to commems for the support to find this coin ... much appreciated!
Enjoying every moment of the hunt for both sets ...
