stupid question time before 2005 all UNC Mint sets were circulation finish 2005 -2010 were the satin finish coins
the TPGs are giving these coins the "SP" rather than "MS"
well I was wondering are coins in 2011 and newer go back to MS or all mint sets now "SP"?

Since 2011 to date mint sets use normal finish uncirculated coins, they are graded MS. As you pointed out, 2005 to 2010 were satin finish, so they use the SP (specimen) grade to separate them from the business strikes (MS).

seems to me I have read it somewhere that the mint is giving the UNC sets special treatment
all of my 2012 dollar coins in the mint set are nicer than my cherry picked dollar coins from mint rolls (most were the best coin of 3 rolls)

The Mint defines "Uncirculated" (Mint Set) coins as being struck on lower-speed presses with greater striking force, they are also struck and packaged in their own separate areas off the main production floor.

In general numismatics, "uncirculated" is a condition grade, the U.S. Mint uses it to mean a manufacturing process (a la Proof).

One "anomaly" are those "S" BU Quarters. They look every bit as good as Uncirculated P-D Mint Set coins, even though the Mint makes no claim they are produced as Uncirculated. The "S" BU quarters may in fact be produced in the exact same manner as Uncirculated P-D Mint Set coins (or one slight difference, such as main floor production or a high-speed press being run a lower speed...)

well in the years to come will the TPGs end up giving us a different moniker for these sets because of the different mint process used compared to business strikes?

Yes, and it is as DNA described. It has been done that way for a long time, starting years before the satin finish experiment.
