A new Ostro type for me. Can't exactly pay for it at the moment so the seller was kind enough to hold it for me. A little off-center, but these hardly come to sale and it wasn't hundreds of dollars that similar and better ones usually go for. That aside, it imo is definitely a nice coin from the post-Roman/early medieval era in Europe. This type is on average, smaller than the larger 40-nummi coins such as the wolf and twins folles and folles issued under Theodahad, but is a full 40 nummi denomination (my particular example would have had the XL for 40 on the left-hand side of the reverse). It was struck sometime between 493-534 AD, under the reign of Theodoric the Great, or his grandson Athalaric. I'm still searching for any symbolism the eagle may have had for the Ostrogoths, to hopefully get an idea on why they depicted it on their coins. I like to think it may have to do with the eagle's place in Roman culture, as the protector of the old legions. This preservation and reverence of Roman culture was on Theodoric's agenda, as he wanted to be legitimized by the Roman population he had conquered, and wanting to restore the greatness of Rome. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ostrogothic_KingdomOstrogothic Kingdom of ItalyAE Follis Obv: INVICT-A ROMA, Roma helmeted, facing right Rev: Eagle standing left and facing right, [XL to left] Rome mint, 493-534 AD Ref: COI 76b (Seller's photo) Edited by VisigothKing 11/07/2013 7:28 pm

I saw this coin several weeks ago, sadly I deemed it too expensive. (Not that its not worth it) but just thought at the moment I was more in need of. It would be a good choice for sure. Its just seems like such an investment for a fugly coin with few details.
Again don't get me wrong. The coin was fugly when it was made and probably doesn't look much different. Its a great piece and I am glad that it was made available to you, I just couldn't think of anyone who would appreciate it more. I still want the pointy hat you got!! AHHHH!

Sometimes it's not how pretty an ancient object looks, but it's beauty lies in what it says about ancient history.
Sort of like fossils.
Nice coin.

Quote: whats the diameter of this coin and weight please? Around 10 gr but diameter I don't know for sure, since it isn't in hand. I'd wager its anywhere from 20-24 mm wide. Quote: I still want the pointy hat you got!! AHHHH! Pointy hat? Do you mean.... this pointy hat? My pointy hat!! Thanks all for the comments!
