It looks like there is another "S" under the mint mark of this coin. Please take a look and let me know what you think. As always, thank you for your time.

Your arrows on the first picture are distracting, You should post one with and without the arrows.

I try to tell myself a lot, if there is evidence of a RPM ( repunched mint mark) that if part of it is east /west, there should be evidence of it west elsewhere, and about the same spacing. In otherwords, you need to draw an imaginary "S" with what you call an additional "S" below it. Your arrows show accent on the middle and lower half of the "S" and I cant draw an "S" with that.

Its probably a Type I mint mark, with a little more extra metal or an outflow of metal from the strike. Proof coins are typically struck MORE than once, usually 2 to 3 is about average to get that nice crisp detailed coin.

The Cherry Pickers Guide Vol I goes to great length to help ID each mint mark variety/types for proof coins, its a pretty good investment, minus the coin prices - those should be fixed in the next version.

I don't have access to my CP guide Vol I right now, but it looks normal for that year.

A simple google search of "1981-s Proof Lincoln Cent mint mark varieties" shows this page;

Sorry about the arrows. I looked on your link but I did not see anything similar for 1981. The item underneath appears to be a lighter color than the mint mark.

nothing to be sorry about. It kind of hard to see the color difference, but it may just be from die chips or extra metal. Coop and the other resident experts should chime in soon, if not, sometime tomorrow. In my opinion, typically if I should be able to clearly see an S/S mint mark at that magnification, when I am looking under the microscope. I am overly picky and critical of RPM's because I try to sell them. I know what the customer wants to see, and I guess that drives me to be more critical.

I could be wrong and way off base about the Type I, but the Type I is extremely close. It doesn't have to be exact, since dies/punches eventually wear out, or if any are struck by hand, some aren't hit exactly square and can produce a funky outcome.
