What do you suppose caused the motto to be this"indistinct" for wont of a better word? It doesn't appear to be an advanced die stage ... but is weakly struck, particularly on the right side of the obverse.

I got this from a coin dealer in Germany. I m going to plug it into my 7070 and take the 1880 out.

Improper annealing; the die has "sunk" towards the top of the obverse. The rim remains fairly strong, and the worst is inboard of that. I've seen this on Morgans. A thin planchet could do this too, but the reverse is uniformly strong and the die crack at TS isn't important enough to cause the problem.

I think it's AU as well. It's got nice, bright, original surfaces, but it's weakly struck. I bought it for VG money, including postage, which is why I like to shop the UK, German, and Italian ebay sites. I'm no multi-linguist by any stretch of the imagination, but I get by.

The motto on Shield nickels tend to suffer from severe Longacre doubling as well
