I want to know if this is real.I was roll hunting and I found a penny that looked unlaminaded, but there is a little copper on the rim.The reverse looks weakly struck, but the obverse is strong. Is this painted or an error? I want to get it certified by PCGS.I will post pictures tomorrow. Thanks matt

Edit: I was thinking one thing and typing another.

Post-1982 cents are plated with a layer of pure copper. It is possible to receive an unplated or partially plated cent but many ways exist to chemically remove that copper as well. Pics would be needed to determine the origin of it.

1. unlaminated isn't a numismatic term. You probably mean "unplated".

2. Biokemist6 - Many coins that are not clad can have laminations. The most common coins for laminations are Buffalo nickels and Lincoln cents and both of these are alloy composition, not clad.

I have a "zinc" Lincoln Memorial cent. I think it's from 1995. The entire coin is a dull silver color that looks a lot like the color of worn 1943 pennies. Under 10x magnification, I can see the slightest traces of copper inside a couple of the nooks & crannies in the lettering. I always assumed that the copper was chemically remomved, but I do think I've heard of "authentic" zinc Lincoln Memorial cents.
