Hello all,
We are trying to identify this coin or religious symbol that my husbands grandfather carried with him during the war, and then for the rest of his life. It's obviously quite worn, but we think it has something to do with the birth of Jesus. Any ideas? We know he obtained it sometime in the 1930s. He is hoping to identify it so he can get another one to wear as a necklace, and keep this one in a safe place...
Thank you for any advice or help you can give!
Hillary

Hillarylmt, This looks like a religious medal. Reading about the history led me to that conclusion. Hopefully some others can identify it. Above all else, it is a family treasure.
Any identification on the reverse?

An idea:
If a religious medal I would suggest the "Adoration of the Magi."
The third king in the middle is unidentifiable.
The "Three Kings" of Christmas.

Welcome Hillary! Unless it has a denomination on the reverse, it's almost certainly a medal. I'm not a medal expert but, to my eyes, the image looks like one person who has been injured, supported from behind by one person, attended from in front by another person leaning over, with two other people, one on each side. Given the context of the war, I'd guess that it was medal honoring a military rescue team of some sort.

I was ready to say you were crazy, Roger, unless the uppermost "soldier" has earned a halo! But I think you may be right about the central figure of a wounded man. Only, I think the man is Jesus, and the depiction may be what is typically referred to as "Christ's Descent From the Cross."

Thank you all so much for the information. I should not have used the word coin. My husband got that in my head. I think it is clear it is a medal or medallion. The back is completely smooth, any writing that may have been on it was worn off by years and years of being carried in his pocket. It is about the size of a half dollar. I have tried to google some of the terms you have supplied me with, but wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction of good websites with pictures I can compare to? Thanks again so much! We are on a mission!
