In June of 1980, Charles Hoskins authenticated an Attica tetradrachm for me. The coin, in its flip, was returned to me inclosed in this card. (Please note the following two pictures and his signed opinion). (Also note that the actual coin is silver in color).

Earliest-Authenticator?

Am I correct in thinking that his INS service was the very first to authenticate coins?

They MAY have been. ANACS began in April 1972, and INS began either a couple weeks before or a couple weeks after depending on sources. Hoskins was originally the president of ANACS and left there to join INSAB in 1976 after a burglery at ANACS in which nothing was actually stolen, but all of ANACS's database of genuine die characteristics was copied. I do find the card interesting as that is an INS certificate that I am not familiar with. Would you mind if I use the images?

Certainly, Conder101. You can use these images in any way you see fit.

BTW, the mailing envelope, dated Jun 5'80, has this return address -

INS
Post Office Box 19386
Washington, DC 20036

I love that they had a PO Box for "INS" in DC. I wonder how much mis-delivered mail they got and the other way around lol.

I find it interesting that the PO Box on the certificate is different from the one on the envelope.
