Hello All,

My first post!

I am a major n00b when it comes to numismatics, but I inherited several hundred coins from all over the world and have been looking them all up lately. They are of course all circulated.

I started researching the 1864 Shield Two Cent (Large Motto) piece that I have and right away I started looking around for a "G" mint mark version as it looks like there is a "G" next to the date on my piece (then of course I also found that it doesn't seem there ever was a G used as a mint mark). I have now started to doubt if I actually see a "G" on the coin and think it could be just random wear or imperfection in the metal. But, I was wondering if it is possibly some kind of error. Sorry I couldn't get a better picture, but my camera is not the best.

Thank you in advance for any help!

The vertical & horizontal marks are almost all scratches, to bad too. The "G" is also some sort of damage, as there should be nothing there on an undamaged coin. Two Cents pieces were all created at the Philadelphia mint and have no mint mark.

Thank you both very much for your replies. The more I look at it, the more it does look like damage.

Thanks again!

Welcome to CCF. Looks like a large motto and that is PMD not an error.

The scratches look like intentional engravings, similar to a Buffalo hobo nickel. If it is really a G, it could be the initial of the "artist".
