this medal shows that coins/medals have three sides. mintage 250 in two varieties one with a plain edge the other with a Maria Theresa Thaler edge: How I took the photo: the reverse was photographed using axial lighting( the only way I could get the toning right) then I photographed the edges of the two types using a flashlight reflector I had to over expose the photographs to ensure the edges were visible. The rest was Photoshop. Note the "A" on the blank edge has to be the Vienna mint mark( the medals were struck by that mint.

Flashlight reflector, eh? Ingenious

Both the photography and the coin are beautiful!

xshift Thanks it was a technique the secretary of the NZ numismatic society told me about 5 years ago.....but knowing and doing are two different things. For coins with ornate edges ( or ones where the varieties are sorted by the edges: like the medal) its invaluable. Probably would also be useful for Spanish dollars. Its a fun technique to develop hence sharing here under photography

Very nice technique. I will give it a try on a coin that has something interesting to show on the edges. I'd bet this technique would be useful to show the edges of proofs...Ray

I first read about the technique for imaging Bust Half edge lettering. That's a scintillating image, austokiwi. I very much like the idea of presenting both possible edges simultaneously.

Absolutely astounding image and composition!! I have heard of this method before, and I have had a flashlight reflector on my ebay watch list for months...just haven't pulled the trigger. This might be the impetus I needed.
