This was just put up for sale by The Canadian Numismatic Company, for 1/4 million $. See E-bay # 301015156979, doesn't get any better than this !

Just curious if this would still grade MS 65 if not in the holder..I see some finger prints on rev.. and the Obv looks like a dig near the bridge of his nose......Still a great coin for sure

The mark by the King's nose is the mark that was created when it was stolen from Pittman way back in the day. The thief stole this coin and the 1936 dot penny from Pittman's house and the theory is while shaking his back of stolen goodies it created a mark by the king's nose. This is the only way one can identify this coin as the Pittman example.

I have seen this coin in person while walking threw a coin convention not long ago it looks gorgeous and as far as the finger marks the camera is very sensitive. In real life it simply shines and has wonderful luster. For sure one of the top 2 best looking 1921 50 cents that exist in my opinion.

According to ICCS there are 2 MS65's and 1 MS66. I'd like to see how those look in comparison to this coin. If it's ex. Pittman, why did ICCS not comment it?

The ICCS report is wrong there is only 1 MS-65 graded twice by them (same coin went to PCGS then back and fort to ICCS) in the past few years. I asked the seller that question a few weeks ago about the Pittman pedigree been removed he simply said he preferred it that way at the time he got it graded I believe he said it was graded about 5 years ago by ICCS.

For $249,000 I would have expected much better pictures.

Would this purchase be subject to Tax?

As far as taxes go if you live in the U.S the answer is no but then you would have to pay customs on the full declared value so the answer becomes yes. If you live in Canada taxes would apply.

As for the pictures I agree I saw the coin in person a few weeks ago and let me tell you that this coin looks soooo much better in person the pictures do not do this coin justice....the luster is very strong....the eye appeal is great!!

Thanks for the info but it still does not take away the fact that the coin is damaged ...Does it still merit that grade with the issue at hand.. And what if it was not Pittman...and maybe some regular guy..would they still assign that grade ?

I can't answer that I don't make the rules. I just know this specif coin is a Canadian national treasure and wish I could own it (Probably like most any Canadian coin collector). In my opinion it deserves a good home and hopefully it stays in Canada.

Hey Sid, little while from now The R.C.M. will announce they've just located a large stockpile of Mintstate 1921 halves that were forgotten and never melted down! Then we can all afford to own one, LOL.

Do you guys think they still have any hidden in their vaults?

I think they would sell them one by one if they did not crazy enough to lose all that money let's say they had 5 or so in very good condition that is still almost 250 000$.

I for one do not believe they have any of this date and denomination because by LAW they where suppose to melt them down in 1921 they would look pretty stupid if they did not follow the laws of those days....people would not trust them much after a thing like that.

My 1921 is proof like.

Only one little problem with it. It says COPY over in the leaves...lol.

Sigh.

They were more than likely melted, coinsarethebest...but one just never knows. For that precise reason I tend to shy away from coins with a rarity due to melts.
