slqcarnell1: a famous expert and perhaps the most knowledgeable person who visits this forum has already commented: Mike Diamond. I guess you have to either (A) send it to Rick Snow for his opinion or (B) send it in to get slabbed. Please keep us updated.

If I owned this coin and thought it was authentic, I wouldn't hesitate. I'd send it in to either PCGS or ANACS and get it slabbed, graded and attributed.

ANACS doesn't require a membership and coins can be sent in. If by the end of this month, they are running the "LFO - Limited Fall Offer".

It will put your mind at ease knowing what a 3rd party grading service says about the coin. You can also go the cheaper way out and submit it to John Wexler to attribute it so you can get an idea of its authenticity. That way if John says 'yes" you can then send that paperwork and coin into a 3rd party grading and get it graded as well as looked over for the variety it may be.

It looks good to me, what is odd is it appears the first strike was the off-center one and the second strike was on center. Usually you see it the other way round

If memory serves me right, 1898 was a relatively big year for double struck indians although many were slightly rotated in collar double strikes.

Looks fishy to me. If its struck a second time that far off out of collar wouldn't it make it more egg shaped? My guess is that it was made with a soft die
