1923-Peace-Dollar-Used-As-Counterfeiting-Practice

While organizing some coins in a collection I'm appraising, I noticed this coin. It looked like a 1923-S Peace dollar, but the S struck me as odd, so I put it aside for a closer look.

Turns out, somebody had actually scratched a small S onto a '23-P dollar. It's quite convincing at a glance, so this was done by someone who had specialty tools and quite a bit of practice. Interestingly, the '23-S fetches a negligible premium over the '23-P. Makes me think that someone was testing their skills on a cheap coin before moving on to bigger game.

Has anyone else seen anything similar?

A close up would help, kind of looks like debris or darkening of the MM from here but it is where the MM should be.

Yeah it looks odd to me as well.

As for your hypothesis, I believe you could be onto something.

A 1923-P has a reported mintage of 30.8 million
A 1923-S has a reported mintage of 19.02 million

Looks like a genuine untampered with 23-S Peace dollar to me.
