I've long been fond of the seated liberty series and have been on again off again trying to get started on a type set, but it can be pretty daunting when looking at some of the earlier no-stars and no-drapery coins as well as the dollars in high enough grades where all the details remain. PCGS has a nice registry set list of 29 coins (including the impossible to find Gobrecht dollars) that cover all the major design changes within the series and is a great guide (I prefer to exclude the Gobrect Dollars and the Trade dollar). However, wanting to focus my limited resources on other series I'm currently working on, I realized I can do a seated type set with only 6 coins and still cover all the basic major design changes while getting one of each denomination that used the design. They are as follows:

Type 1: Obverse No stars, No Drapery: Reverse Laurel Wreath ( Half Dime or Dime)
Type 2: Obverse Stars: Reverse No Motto (Quarter, Half Dollar, or Dollar)
Type 3: Obverse Arrows: Reverse Rays (Quarter or Half Dollar)
Type 4: Obverse Stars: Reverse Motto (Quarter, Half Dollar, or Dollar)
Type 5: Obverse Legend: Reverse Corn/Wheat Wreath ( Half Dime or Dime)
Twenty Cent Piece

I thought to share my idea in case someone else was interested in doing a seated type set or was interested in supplementing the Dansco 7070 (The Dansco 7070 only focuses on Motto, No Motto and Arrows) while keeping on a set budget.

The key to this short series is the Type 1. The No Stars, No Drapery in either a Half Dime or dime will be the biggest challenge in my opinion, followed closely by the Twenty Cent Piece. Other than that its just picking which coin fits best for you in the other categories.

Happy Hunting!

you've certainly peaked my interest! I heart Liberty Seated dimes more than anything and have also ventured into ownership on type coins for the Half Dime and quarter.

I agree with you that the Type 1 No Stars/No Drapery is a budget challenge for a problem free high grade. I have both the 1837 Dime and Half Dime with the Dime sitting in a PCGS AU53 holder and those coins are not as prevalent problem free as one might think. You'll also note that there is a Large Date and Small Date option for this type coin.

Also, if you get into the No Drapery first year issue of the dime, you get the Small Stars and Large Stars option due to the minting error that occurred that year ( Half Dime Stars on a Dime Obverse). There's also the Partial Drapery variety that occurred in 1838.

I know this is a short set idea but would you account for the 1873 and 1874 w/arr on the Dime as a Type Coin within the set?

EF, maybe you can start a Seated Series Thread and the community can jump in with pics of each type that they have for viewing pleasure.

DS, In keeping with the short set aspect I only went with the 53 arrows design so you would only need to acquire just one of each denomination (H10,10,20,25,50,100). That only leaves the 1853 coins for the arrows so you can have both arrows AND rays on one coin (quarter or half dollar). The various star sizes and various date sizes I see as less of a major design change and more of a minor design change (or mint error). Of course you can branch out into any number of types beyond the 6 coins I listed, and the nice thing about this 6 coin set if you ever wanted to try and do the entire 29 (or 26) coin series you are already 6 coins into it! I hope to some day do just that, but I really want to put all my efforts into Seated half dimes for the foreseeable future.

I'm currently two coins in on this short set, having picked up two from the Newman sale, an 1873 H10 and a 1845 quarter. This means I have to collect an 1853 Arrows and Rays half dollar (there are no other options for that slot in keeping with one coin per denomination, going the 1853 quarter route would be much easier on the budget). I also am locked into a with motto dollar, which makes things easier on that front.

I would love to see a seated series thread, especially by type! I don't have a type 1 coin yet (no stars or no drapery) so I won't be able to kick it off. I can certainly contribute on the other types though, pulling from my 7070 and a few other places.
