Just wanted quick thought on if this is a fake? I hope the pics are clear enough, all I can provide on these is phone camera pics.

The weight is 27.2 grams. Does being almost a full gram under standard weight already rule this out being real? I would think it does but the strike/details looks pretty good so I thought I would post it here for further review. Also to note, the reeded edge is very light which makes me think of a more modern coin thus fake.

Thanks in advance

Was this from ebay ? I bid for an similar counterfeit recently and got outbid as I was just going to buy it as such. To me there is little to no wear to account for being a gram under weight.

Alright, thanks for the clarification guys. I don't own the coin. The only other fake I have seen in person was really bad so this having better detail gave me hope it was real.

plonker, nope not ebay.

I agree, modern replica.

Was this coin being sold from Italy, Spain or Israel? These countries are infamous for counterfeit coin sellers

Just one last - late comment. From a guy who feels like being a wise guy today.

Does anyone know what kind of edge was placed on an Eritrea Tallero?

It would easily clear up all questions about this coin by simply asking -

WHERE IS THE LETTERED EDGE?

The THIRD side of a coin is a good side to get to know for all world coin collectors.

One thing for sure the Chinese forgers have not got a clue in that regard.

It sucks that Krause doesn't list edge info.

Eretria was an Italian possession and the 5 Lira coins of King Umberto all feature a lettered edge that reads FERT three times with figures in between.

The 1918 tallero has the FERT lettered edge. The 1891 series coins have a reeded edge (I have some of them). The coin posted here is still a replica though. :)

Hi,

I saw a similar coin from the year 1896 on ebay.com. These are the photos on the ad:

http://s33.postimg.org/x81xt0s67/umberto.jpg

The seller doesn't now the exact weight. I have strong believes it is a fake but on the other hand: I only know about fake 1891's. and evenmore the green erosion on the coin can occur with silver coins? isn't it?

Could any one give his oppinion on this coin?
