Hello guys, I sold some coins with profit to buy new and better ones.. One of those I just bought isn't the best example of a Nimes dupondius but I was able to buy it for a good price! Dupondius of Nimes Obverse: Laureate Augustus and Agrippa heads back to back, IMP DIVI FPP (Heads of Agrippa (left) and Augustus (right) back to back) Reverse: Crocodile chained to palm tree COL NEM 11.65 grs Diam : 25.2 X 26.2 mm The photo of the seller isn't really sharp.. Nice - Id have skimped for 2 cut halves and some glue!
Yours is much nicer than mine (ive only got one worn half with augustus and the croc head). I wonder why Agrippa has lasted so much better than Augustus? Uneven strike?

Quote:Maybe someone can tell me why there are so many....demi as de Nimes on ebay? It has always confused me. Here's one opinion, seems to be shared by many... from http://www.academia.edu/3609530/Rom...ut_in_pieces Quote: These coins were often carefully cut in half so each part still had one of the portraits of the men depicted. These early examples are sometimes found in military camps founded early in the reign of the emperor Augustus (for example Nijmegen, Haltern, Oberadenand Augst).More commonly found asses and halves are the so called Nemausus asses struck in Nimes in the south of France. The Colonia Augusta Nemausus was founded around theyear 28 BC and was mainly inhabitat by veterans who had fought in Egypt. Because of this a crocodile was depicted on the reverse of the coin chained to a palmtree. The obverse of the coin again has the depiction of two heads namely the portraits of Agrippa(left) and Augustus (right). This once more made these coins very suitable to be cut inhalf and even cut into four pieces. Emissions of these coins were struck from around 16BC until the year 3 or 2 BC. A last emission wich included the letters PP (pater patriae)on the obverse were probably minted around the year 14 AD (4). Mostly in French publications these coins are called dupondii (5). Because of the halving and quartering of these coins along the Dutch and German limes they must have circulated there as asses. The bulk of copper coins found are copper asses so why should the people create even more asses by cutting dupondii in half?

I have always noticed that while the description is that they were 'cut' in half ...... they do not have the appearance of having been cut. Even if chopped with a chisel I would expect clear evidence of the process. A chisel I believe would leave a tapered line where the chisel penetrated the metal before the lower half broke away. These coins seem to me to have been cracked like a hard cookie. There is a roughness to the line. I know this is a minor detail but having worked in a factory chopping and stamping metal parts for 20 years it does intrigue me. A cut will leave 'tool' marks ...... I don't see them.
