Just picked up this medallion in an auction. Sleeve says it's sterling silver, but how can I be sure when apparently there was a copper nickel version produced?

After searching the internet and E-bay, I decided to weigh the piece (25g) and measure the diameter which appears to be around 34mm. The little technical information I found dealt mostly with the non precious medal version (blue case, 42g, 37mm) and if correct would lead me to believe that for I got a pretty good deal having paid less than melt for it.

Having only vaguely heard about the coin before, I was attracted to the fact that it was produced by the RCM.

Can anyone else shed some light on this? Have I done my homework and answered my own questions?

Understandably one cannot always rely on the information provided on the internet. While one seller mentioned 25.1 grams for the silver piece, another said it was a one ounce coin, neither mentioned the diameter.

Thanks!

A rough calculation shows that the melt value would be approximately $16.60US give or take. If you paid less than melt, I am surprised just because silver hoarders are relentless and very thorough especially on ebay. I can't find any site that gives the actual specs on the silver version.

Nonetheless, this is an interesting medallion and speaks to the fruitful and peaceful relationship that Canada and the US have enjoyed for many years. A noble gesture from our northern friends after the 9/11 tragedy. Nowhere on the medallion is Canada mentioned, pretty classy if you ask me.

Cheers!

Thanks Biancasdad for the info. The coin was purchased in a live auction where it received little attention, probably because few bothered to read the outer sleeve.

As you noted information is scarce, it being a 12+ year old collectible and the fact that the <$5.00 Cu Ni counterpart is almost identical to the uninformed. Canada did something similar with the Olympic Loonie that came in sterling silver and nickel 7gram versions and identical designs.

Recently I saw the medallion on a major coin dealer's website for $30 CDN and I was also further able to confirm the value, weight and diameter. Makes up for some of the items I put into the same auction that didn't sell as well as expected.

Definately one medallion that I'm going to be hanging on to which will go nicely with my collection of Obama medals and other U.S. coins for mall displays.
