I always thought it would be cool to have a gold doubloon so when I saw this coin on Teletrade a few years back I jumped on it. I also had no example of a gold coin from Chile, and since this one was made in Santiago it serves that function also.

Every time I pull it out I can't resist saying "Arrrrgh!"

Oh yeah, PCGS graded this AU-50. It's got really nice luster but the strike is weak over the portrait, which I hear is pretty typical for the issue.

Don't show my wife that coin. She may not be in coin collecting but she very well may want a coin such as that.

Very nice coin.

Spanish gold coins, from whatever mint, were international trade coins widely used. The "pirate era" in the Carribbean, however, peaked between 1715 (when privateers for England and the Netherlands turned buccaneer because those countries were then granted free access to trade) and 1735 when the British and Dutch hanged the last of the notorious pirates. A "privateer" was a pirate employed by a government or private merchant. A "buccaneer" was a self-employed pirate.
