What are the circumstances under which this coin was procured?

Can you put up a larger picture of the obverse?

It is likely a modern reproduction (lack of denticles on revers) of what is known as a Bar Copper. http://www.coins.nd.edu/ColCoin/Col...r.intro.html

Welcome to the CCF!

Not seeing it in the pics but look closely in hand for...

Quote:
Original examples will have a spur protruding down from the far right side of the second bar toward the third. Often there is also a small die crack joining the two bars almost in the middle of the coin.

from what you say and pics I've found sniffin around it appears that yes, there is evidence of a spur of sorts. its a little more worn than others I've seen. I do not however notice said die crack. my girlfriend took my truck to school and my camera is in it. ill try to get better pics up when I can, but thank you all for the information. I have hundred of coins I need to start looking at. stay tuned

Deavila,
Indeed, there are bar copper copies (especially old electrotypes) that are faithful to the diagnostics on the originals, like the spurred 2nd bar, and the A overlying the S. That page doesn't seem to point out what gives away that particular coin as a copy, though.
