I have a friend that asked me about this coin, I have no idea about current price but it was purchased for $4000.00 in the 80s... I am wanting to know what it is, year and possible value... thanks for any and all info you can give... PEACE

Gold escudos from the Nuestra Senora de Atocha, are very rare.
Authentication is a must on this coin.

Are there any known fakes for this coin?

The COA was lost, but the lady who has it purchased the coin in the 90s in a gold bezel that surrounds the coins edges... I'm sorry the pictures suck they were taken with my phone lol... weight it 42 grams with bezel...

The photo sure makes this look silver, not gold. And I'm no expert on Atocha, although I have been an Atocha fan for many years.

I can say that I agree with the previous post - very few gold coins were found. Mostly silver.

If this is gold, chances are that it can be verified by photograph, and perhaps even a replacement certificate created.

YES, fakes and "recreations" of the silver coins have been made, so there is no reason to expect that fakes of the gold coins haven't been made, too.

Look at other bezels online. This bezel does not look even close to other Atocha coin bezels.

Without a certificate of authenticity, I'd stay away from this.
