Looking through some silver stock. Here is a 46 partial. Early stage of "hoof in 6"

For some unknown (at least to me) reason the '6' on the 1946 dies is very prone to die chips.... there are at least five different configurations of these die chips...
This is not the precursor of the later die state 'hoof through 6', which starts out at some 65 degrees of orientation. But this coin is cerainly worth saving if you are trying to find all the possible configurations of the die chips.

Hey pginrh, I though this variety (I think Zoell # R447a or c) was the partial to a full hoof in (which I also have). I've compared a couple and it seemed the closest (although I'm no expert on these). Are you saying the partial design with a chip around 10:00 pos. with a die break towards "4" is the precursor?

The last two date digits on the 1941-1949 fifty cents were entered individually on the dies. The 6 on the coin above is almost touching the ring on the unicorn's chain, while the 6 on the 'hoof through 6' is away from the 6 a bit.... The progression from die chip through the intermediate chip+die crack to the full doublechip+die crack can be seen in Charlton's 68th on page 316.

I just ordered the 68th, I'll have a look. Great input. Thanks.
