whilst searching in vain to ID a coin on the Forum, I bumped into this beauty... Portus on a sesterce issued by Nero, in 64 AD. Legend: AVGVSTI | S POR OST C = Portus Ostiensis Augusti, senatus consulto. being a man who loves the sea and all things nautical and also a coin lover....well, I could never afford one and I havent even looked to see how much they are!! I can only guess...

Ya Yoc, I bet this beauty is very pricey, one thinks for sure, you'd get a whole fleet of ships with this coin, very cool...

I saw a previous sale with an auction estimate of £2-3000 GBP, but that was just the estimate... the story surrounding the construction of the Port is fascinating too, have a read.

IMO this is the most beautiful coin issued under Nero's rule. It is a very rare example especially in this condition.

An example of this coin was pictured on the cover of Sear's 1970 edition of Roman Coins and Their Values. Another member of the CCF who lives in Western Australia now has my copy of that book.
