Sold a fairly valuable coin on ebay. Shipped it 'signature confirmation.' It arrived at the buyers address yesterday, and apparently he wasn't home so my tracking information says, "left notice." I actually called the post office to see what that meant, and they said they will hold it, and not try to deliver it again. I actually have no problem with that......at least I feel it's safe in the PO. The only unusual thing is that the buyer originally paid with an 'echeck' via paypal and it took about 5 days to clear before I shipped the coin. I communicated originally with the buyer letting them know that I would ship as soon as the check cleared. Should I try and communicate again? I feel that it's really not needed. If I was them I would be all over checking the status of the order seeing it was a $1700 coin...but that's just me. I'll probably give them until Monday before I begin to panic

Best to communicate the situation. They will definitely appreciate it

Good suggestion. I think I just needed a little push. It's already done. Thanks. Ed

left notice means just that...the mailperson left a notice slip informing the customer they have an article at the post office that could not be left, in this case something requiring a signature if they don't come pick it up or request redelivery of the item they will receive a second notice usually 3-4 days after the first notice

OK, thank you, good to know. As far as I know, they haven't picked it up from the PO yet. I called the PO again and they said they will hold it for 10-15 days. Not sure what happens after that. Ed.

They send it back to you if its not picked up. Not trying to deliver it again kind of works to your disadvantage with that if he didnt see the first notice or lose it and forget about it.
For what its worth some people are just slow to get things like that.

Has the buyer responded to your communication?

Thanks for the replies. No response yet from my communication. I think ebay will give me his phone # if it gets to that point. I'm not 100% thrilled that it's sitting in the PO, and can't help but think that it cuts into the time the seller has to return it.

Maybe it's a situation like mine. I don't drive and the post office is 15 miles away. Sometimes it's two weeks before I can get a ride to pick up a parcel. However I usually call the post office to hold it for me, and they know me well. I hate. Missing my postie and having to go to the post office. In Canada , you'll get a notice after 7 days, and they will send it back after two weeks.

Even if I didn't have a car, if I had a $1700 coin sitting at the post office I would get up there no matter what.. cab, bus, my own two feet!

Thanks. The PO happens to be in a fairly wealthy, and densly populated part of the country, so I'm hoping that $1700 is no big whoop for them. But still, I agree that if that was my coin, I'd be all over it. We shall see.......

I wouldnt worry about it right now. The tracking has it at that post office so itd be easier to narrow down who took it. When they go missing its usually before they get scanned in if you dont wait for a receipt or when theres no tracking.

On the ebay 'order details page' it shows the buyer's phone #. Should I give it a call? Hate the thought of the coin sitting there. ..........OK, so I called the number, and the buyer answered the phone, and stated that "she" (funny, but just didn't expect a 'she', the name was a bit androgenous) had a family emergency and just got back and would be going to the post office today. We shall see....sounds a bit fishy. Had to know it was coming USPS. We always have the mail held when we go out of town. Will give her the benefit of the doubt for the time being.

I still don't think its much to worry about. If she doesn't pick it up, USPS will send it back your way.

Glad it worked out. I am always nervous with each ebay transaction until it has been completed.
