I'd always thought that priority mail was faster than first class or media mail. However, what I've found is that if it has a tracking number, it's usually the same unless the package is going cross country. Even then it's only a day or two longer. Even so, it's still faster and cheaper than Fedex or UPS for light packages.

So here's my shipping strategy. Under 8 ounces- first class. Between 8 and 13 ounces- media mail for books and albums, first class for the rest. Between 13 ounces and 2 pounds- priority mail. Between 2 and 10 pounds- priority mail flat rate or flat rate regional. Over 10 pounds- Fedex ground.

If you can fit it over 10 pounds in a flat rate box, keep in mind you can ship up to 70 pounds. I have shipped 45+ pound truck parts for $15.30 across country. It is really a good thing.

The speed largely depends on where its going from and too. If its going coast to coast like LA to NY first class and priority are the same since they both end up on a plane instead of going on the ground. Now if its going from like Maine to a small town in Kansas priority does have a speed advantage the further it gets away from large cities.

They do seem to end up taking the same path, but the priority does generally seem to get processed faster instead of sitting somewhere over night it will usually leave by the end of that day.

Baseball summed it up pretty well. In addition you'll see the biggest difference in handling time at the busiest times of the year. Priority Mail is by far the most emphasized service by the post office. Aside from Express Mail, Priority is the first mail processed at the plant. FYI, Media Mail is the last mail class (other than business bulk mail) to get processed. At high volume times Media Mail could possibly sit for days.
