So I'm basically a newbie when it comes to buying on ebay.... I recently purchased a coin from asyn... They stated that it was in MS grade... and will take returns up to 7 days... The coin came on Thursday Nov 7th.... I just opened the package today Nov. 11th... The coin is EF at best and shows a lot of signs of being whizzed or cleaned abrasively.. I sent asyn a message saying that I intend on sending the coin back tomorrow.... and I expect to be refunded for the coin... I have never done a refund before... is there any other steps I should be taking to make sure I get refunded my money? I have never done anything like this before so please assume I know absolutely nothing.. which in this case would be true. Thank you for all help and input

You have it all correct ... message to the seller with your intention then off to the mail it goes.
Be sure to package the return as well as the seller sent it ...
Depending on value ... you might consider adding tracking and/or even signature confirmation on the return post ... but that all depends on your personal risk tolerance.
Let us know how it goes for you ... should be fine.

For sure add postal tracking to it so that you have proof he received the return.

Save all the emails you have with him as well. ebay can see any correspondence on the site as long as you dont delete it if you have to open a case. I would also agree absolutely use tracking. If you dont use tracking all he has to do is claim he never got it and theres nothing you can do about it

This is what I would do. I would open up a case, and choose the "product differs greatly than advertised" If the seller wants to cancel the transaction, I typically say no. If you say YES to a cancellation, you won't get to leave feedback and that's important to do in cases like this. Opening a case means that the item can be looked at by ebay as well. Ask the seller for the return address as well. It may differ than from the one on the package. You should be able to go into your ebay, and next to the item, you should have a pull down menu to the right. If I remember correctly, there may be an open case / file dispute in there. When the scammers say "high grade" they are saying it in general terms. They use the full scale, from Zero to 70, and if a coin is say above 40+, its a High grade....to them anyway....

This seller uses numerical grades in the titles of his listings, but his grading is nowhere near accurate. Most seasoned numismatists accept this and bid accordingly, but many aren't experienced graders and take his word as gospel. They lose out most times. I don't foresee you having an issue returning the item. Using a tracking tool is definitely good advice though. I am curious as to whether or not asyn blocks you though.

This brings up a point. I had a non-numismatic ebay purchase last month that arrived missing parts. When I worked through ebay's message system to notify the seller of a problem, it automatically opened a case for me. The system did not use to work that way. After 3 or 4 days the system asked me if the seller had responded, I said no and received an immediate "courtesy refund" and was able to keep the item. The only issue I had was ebay "creating" a case. I wasn't even trying to open a case, just wanted the seller to know I was missing a couple screws and a mounting bracket. Curious.

I agree with Collector-Corner, open up a case. They only have bad repercussion against the seller if he doesn't respond to it or doesn't act in a favorable way. You can open a case simply for item received as not described. It will also give you a longer amount of time to send it back as you are waiting for the seller to respond to the case. One sure thing ebay is darn good about is protecting their buyers over their sellers lol

Follow the established ebay procedures and you should not have a problem returning the item and receiving your refund. You can find those procedures by going to your " My eEbay " page; then find the item in your "Purchase History". Click on the "more actions" drop down box on the right. One of the options is "Resolve a Problem". Following that link should step you through the process. What ever you do, make absolutely 100% sure you return the item with Signature Delivery Confirmation so you can prove the Seller received the return. Good luck!

asyn sells usually not expensive products so you have to evaluate if it makes sense or not take the risk of the return.
And I've heard that he block you with these "kind" of customers.

Well I did something really stupid...
I had a bunch of things to mail off.. just typical letters and such... So I handed them all over to the postie to put the appropriate stamps on and such... in the process of doing so I totally forgot to ask for confirmed delivery by signature.... for the one going to ASYN...
This whole e-bay thing has been a learning curve.. and I suppose there will be yet another lesson here... I should've taken more care.. hopefully asyn as a seller is honest when he/she receives the coin back and refunds my money.
I will keep you all posted as to how this all shakes out in the end.

Update:
All the other things I ended up mailing that day reached their final destination... in fact... I had also mailed some other letters and cards out a week later and those have all arrived at their destinations as well.
So I called ASYN yesterday.. they say they haven't received it yet. Part of me thinks that since I forgot to put tracking on it.. they will just put it back into their stock pile and sell it another time.. leaving me with a sucker punch...
I'm frustrated with myself at this point... as it was my own absent mindedness that now allows someone to be dishonest and essentially get away with theft.. argh!

So I called again this week... and talked to the same guy.. I honestly don't know how I found his number b/c when I tried looking on the e-bay site again I couldn't find a phone number anywhere so I just went through my call history until I found it.
Never the less... he said he didn't have it.... and sincerly sounded appologetic.. I really did believe him that he didn't have the coin.. but was frustrated b/c all the other stuff I had mailed out had reached it's destination.
That was two days ago... Today I receive an e-mail from ASYN and they have stated they did in fact receive my package.. and I will be receiving my refund shortly once it's processed on their end.
The other day I had pretty much accepted the loss and figured I would just buy at coin shows or from my LCS.... I still may stick with that decision... I have learned a lot about this experience though.
Long and short I was pleased with the response from ASYN.. they were very professional and quick to reply with all my questions and concerns. I now know how to ship, label and package my coins a bit better for returns... (I sent it in a white envelope instead of a brown one which can cause some issues apparently)

I should note that my faith in most peoples integrity has been restored ... and was faultered when I heard that if I didn't ship with a signature it would be not be reported as received.
My faith in humanity is restored.. and anxiety levels.. now have depreciated.. I do still feel stupid.. but those were all my own errors...
I shall now tuck my tail and exit stage left... thank you all for your replies and concern...
Ohh and to the one person wondering if I have been blocked or banned from bidding on ASYN.. (I'm honestly not sure... if that has happened yet.. but I can go to their site and follow all of their auctions up to this point... so I don't think so.)
