Ok, so today my second batch of coins came in from my original order. I got these coins in a bundle deal, and this was a major player in the bundle. It was described as DMPL and BU. The pictures seemed to justify the means, but always have to see in person. After looking at it, I was very impressed with the strong mirror-like qualities. Then, I noticed something not visible in the sellers pictures. There is a small dot behind liberty's head/hat in line with the second you in UNUM. In addition, it looks like someone has tried to remove the dot which is what really scares me. I am going to post some pics up, I don't have my usual light source (the sun) but I did what I could. You can see the scuff and dot in the first shot, the dot by itself in the second at different angle, and the scuff and dot in the third pic with different lighting. What do you guys think? It isn't really visible face on, you have to get an angle on the coin and you can see the scuffing. But since it is very mirror like, it is noticeable in the light. I am hesitant to take it out of the mylar because then I void my ability to return it. Any input on this would be great, I just don't know if it is something to worry about. I purchased this with the intention of someday sending in it for grading, I just don't want to invest in something that will automatically come back as details or as circulated. Thanks in advance, cant wait to hear from you all.

Yeah, unfortunately it's a details coins with that scuff. I would return that if you paid anything over melt value.

It looks like the dot you are referring to is a carbon spot, that someone may have tried to wipe off with something, causing the scuff.

Aww man, I had a feeling that was the case. It is a shame, the coin is really nice too other than that little mark. The dot does look like carbon to me, I just wish someone would have left it alone. Thanks for your input Dave and CB.

Yeah I would have to say that the scuff or scratches will cause the coin to come back as "Uncirculated details" and be given a caveat of "scuff" or "scratch".
I don't know what you paid for it, or where you got it. If it is not what you expected, ask if you can send it back.
Bewarned - if this is the quality your getting now, you will probably get the same in the future if it is not addressed. Also, do yourself a favor and weight and do the magnet test on the coins you get. If some one is willing to try to scrub something off a coin, personally I would take the necessary precautions to ensure what I was getting is legit.

I am going to return it, I can't live with that mark. I got it through ebay, the seller has great feedback and is a nice guy so I don't think there is going to be an issue returning the coin. Just wish I didn't have to do that. But all the other coins are as described and pass the magnet test, so he will still get my business in the future. Oh well, on to the next Morgan for me!

Deep cameo. What a shame. It would have been better to leave the carbon spot.

If it's any consolation, 1880-S is among the more common Morgans in PL/DMPL, and doesn't carry a terrific premium with the designation.
