Just a stupid question from an italian VAM newbie.... can someone make a classification of morgan vams referring to the more value that the VAM designation gives? Which are the morgans fairly common that a VAM designation gives a high value? Sorry for my bad english and wish that you could understand my question. Thanks Vincenzo

There are Interest and Rarity ratings given each VAM as it's designated - the "R5, I4" or similar you'll see listed. These are, however, very rough estimates and are often proven wrong in the real world. We simply do not know enough yet to have accurate ideas of value/rarity for more than a few hundred of the 5000 known VAMs, so unfortunately there is no easy answer to your question. One good indicator is membership on the published "lists," The Top 100, Top 50, Elite Clashed, etc. These are varieties which important people in VAMming have identified as of extra interest, and being placed on such a list tends to greatly increase the value of the variety.

As Dave mentioned above there are items that draw interest and those may change from time to time. I am sure many a Morgan dollar has been melted down, and with that happening, I am sure some coin years are more rare than currently thought. Heck some VAM's have been found this century (2000-2013) for a coin that they started minting nearly 135 years ago. VAM world may be able to answer any additioal question in general as well. Those guys live and breathe VAM's and have a site dedicated to just VAM's..... www.vamworld.com The site Link to VAMs listed by year then mintmark is listed here and may offer pics as well as rarity and general sales / values http://www.vamworld.com/Morgan+VAMs+By+Date

I know it is almost impossible to give me an answer but in those few hundred value/rarity of 5000 known vams could you give some examples of some coins that a VAM designation gives a high value compared to related non VAM morgan. I read about the 1878 8TF that is fairly common and is worth about 200$ in ms62 but if you pick a VAM 14.11 variety it is worth more and more.. I was just looking for examples like this. I know about the vamworld site and I always go there when I buy some morgans. Thanks

That's a good one, but look at the 1889-P VAM 23A. An MS63 1889-P can be had for around $75. Put that clash on it and it's zooms to around $40,000+. It's all a product of supply and demand. That VAM has a small supply and a very large demand.

http://www.vamworld.com/1889-O+VAM-20A1889-O VAM 20A in BU is a very high end coin but 89-O in BU's aren't that cheap. Even and AU of this one will fetch a good amount though. But they are hard to spot and then determine if you have the 20A or 20B. Buyers want to see the details so having a good close up image of certain areas are key to selling them. I myself have found 2 - 20A coins within about 2 years without really looking for them. One was cleaned and the other was AU but was in plastic and hard to photograph, I think I finally sold it for around $250. The 1889-P VAM 23A is one you will likely never find but you never know. It is one of the rarist and only a few are known to exist. The 1921-S VAM 1B3A, 1B4, 1B4B, & 1B7 are all high end coins in any grade. http://www.vamworld.com/1921-S+VAM-1B3A The 1B3a is one I found within the last 2 years for common money got graded at PCGS and sold for a nice premium. Not a lot of people would realize there are $1,000+ 1921 morgans in any grade below MS65.

Starting from the assumption that I like the morgans and then wanting to collect these coins, sometimes I just looking around on ebay trying to buy the morgans that I like and in the same time it could give me an opportunity to make some profit even in the future ... On ebay italy you dont find so many vams on sale but just because so many people in italy doesn't know what a VAM is. so maybe there could be a small supply (not identified as VAM) for a small demand. For example I bought a 1889cc for something about 186$ and a GSA 1880/79 rev. of 78 CC VAM 4 for 360$ and maybe (just because it's my last buy and didn't have it in my hand yet..) a 1928 no mint mark Peace dollar for 115$ Thanks to all for this helpful discussion

You have just defined me. It's more difficult these days in America due to competition, but Europe is a different thing. Keep the VAMworld webpage open, and understand that this is a thing which takes practice and repetitions. Soon, you'll know what general features to look for, regardless of year, and you'll be remembering good varieties.
