Greetings all,

This is my first post here, though I've been lurking around for a while. My great aunt died and left me all her coins. Everything looks to be legit, except there was this 1922 apparently plain penny. I don't see any noticeable traces of a D under the magnifying glass, nor do I see any evidence of tampering, but still something seems off about it (other than an apparent wiping/cleaning). Can anyone tell it's authenticity (or lack thereof) from the pictures provided? Thanks!

Hello Matt and welcome to our CC family!

Here is a link describing how to authenticate your coin:
http://www.stanford.edu/~clint/q/1922nod.htm

As far as I can tell, yours looks to be genuine. I think it's the 1st die marriage discussed in the link above.

I would say that the condition is in the VF30-EF40 range. These are difficult to grade because they are so weakly struck.

I'm sure someone else more expert in these will be able to help you.

Matt, there are a few copper experts on the boards that should be able to answer your question.

Welcome to the forum.

Oh, BTW, was there a coin in your links?

Sure looks like a 1922 no D to me, see pics of mine I posted in here. Unfortunately, it looks like it may have been cleaned at some point (diagonal buff marks).

Thank you for the responses. Yes, it does look like it underwent a cleaning at some point, so I guess I can rule out getting it graded by anyone other than ANACS - if I were to get it graded at all.

Susan, thank you for that link. I actually took this coin to a few dealers years back, and they both said it wasn't real, and I tucked it away until I found this site. Now I see what they were talking about. It's not a counterfeit, but it's just not nearly as valuable as the 22 with a strong reverse.

Don't be so quick to brush it off. I was looking at 1922 no D weak reverse's on HA.com and the worst cleaned example fetched about $80 as I recall, and it was way worse than yours. Based on what I saw there, mine is prob in the $200$400 range. Other than those light whiz marks, your's is in great condition if it's real. Definately send it off for authentication and grading.
