A recent pickup and as I was checking the lettered edge with my loupe I thought I was seeing double.
The lettering looks like this in hand-FIFHTIYFTCENCTENTSHTALFAADODLOLLALRA Then a (star) after dollar and before Fifty.

I could use the Capped Bust experts to educate me, I found some info on the lettered edge Overton varieties but which one does this classify as? E-55? E56? Any one know the Overton variety of the coin? I think its small date and letters.
Photos as best I could get. Thanks in advance as always!!

Doubled in the sense of words...Hard to explain.
there are (2) cents and (2) dollars on the edge.

could this be an Overton 118? looks like a double 1834, especially on the 34

The Castaing machine rolled these blanks between two bars, each of which applied half of the edge legend, with a few decorative symbols at the end. Looks like yours went through the Castaing twice, with the coin rotated about four letter spaces the second time. Can you make out two separate legends all the way around?

@ philadelphian,
Thanks for the reply.
Yes I can make out two separate legends, starting with FIFTY,then CENTS,but HALF(I don't see the other letters clearly)then I see "A" twice and DOLLAR twice.

as you stated there is a spacing where the edge legend starts twice.(3 to 4 spaces apart) I see it on every thing but "HALF". At HalF it looks like there are some weak duplicates of the letters, hard to see but when the edge lettering continues after HALF with "A" and "DOLLAR" it is quite clear.

In this case the palchet was rolled once between the bars imparting the inscription once. Then when the bars were cranked back to the starting position the planchet got caught between them again and received the second inscription.

If the planchet had simply been put through the machine twice the chances of the two inscriptions being so closely aligned would be very unlikely.
