Hi all :)
I have an old topic about "rare" in my opinion nickel from 1873:
https://goccf.com/t/138156&whichpage=1

Unfortunately, today I get the number of the coin 28582411 from my dealer, and it is just closed 3 nickel. There is nothing rare according to Paris.
Would you say what you think, in me there is a mistake or a flaw in PCGS Paris? Thanks.

I don't know if this is the case, but did you pay for the attribution fee? And have request PCGS examined for this variety in the first place? It does look like the real deal from the previous post.

It doesn't look like it's one of their recognized overdates - there's no PCGS Coin# listed here http://www.pcgs.com/pcgsnolookup/Detail.aspx?c=81 nor do they do variety plus on Shield nickels (see http://www.pcgs.com/varietyfaq.html)

This does not mean your coin isn't the variety we think it is, just that PCGS (in their arrogance) doesn't deem it worth identifying.

I remember following the other thread (I loved the way you confirmed you had it in hand ). I have heard that ANACS was better at attributing coins, maybe a trip to them and then a crossover to PCGS is in order. Or if you are keeping it, you may consider just busting it out of the offending plastic and enjoying it au natural.

In fact, today I received confirmation via email from one of the largest specialist numismatists in the United States that this is an oversight on the part of PCGS and that my coin is really the rare variety "Large/small 3". Now I do not know what answer we will get from Paris... and how to fill out the documents at the dealer for the same problem does not happen next time.

These professionals work pretty quickly, after an e-mail sent from dealer two days ago, now when check the number in the PCGS site, the coin is "# 3802 Large / Small 3". Looks verified.

Although PCGS doesn't do Shield nickels as a series for attribution, they *do* do Fivaz-Stanton attributions from the Cherrypicker's Guide. So they should have done this for you, and obviously have corrected their error. In an original-surfaces XF45 slab - as your coin is - you've just made a huge score. I would call this one of the five most significant finds ever posted at Coin Community.

If it is your desire to liquidate this coin, I strongly advise you to contact one of the major US coin auction houses to see how best they may serve you as an overseas customer. This coin needs to appear in front of the very top level of collectors.

with SsuperDdave, a very nice score, to a true variety collector, I don't think it will matter if it's slabbed or not, but to get the most value out of it in a sale, it needs to be in a slab, and PCGS is the top tier TPG to provide the best profit from resale.
