Bought a USB Microscope from buy.com 2.0 MP 400X USB Digital Microscope endoscope Magnifier Camera 1600x1200 Anyway trying it out. It is pretty good so far. THe images below are from a 1986 Liberty two piece set. Here is what happened. I bought the set, when I got it I noticed that there was some *** Staff Edit - Not Family Friendly *** on the top part of one of the coins, (1 side only). So after putting in acetone for awhile. I brought it to a friend that has a steam cleaner. Well he wasn't there but his wife was and she took it upon herself to "rub" it with a leather cloth. (leather won't scratch, she says) Well let the pictures show, she scratched up this mirror surface coin.

Wow, she scratched it up pretty bad! You should show her the pics and see if she rethinks her "leather won't scratch" theory. Friend or not I'd be requesting a new coin... That ones blatantly ruined.
The pics look pretty good, are you using the led lights on the cam? or a seperate light source? I have a hard time using the led's on mine, a seperate dial source works better, for mine at least.
Wow 400x? That's pretty strong.. My USB CAM is only 200X and if it zoomed any further would be too much. I'd like to see how close the 400x zooms, you should be able to get down to a quarter of a number in a date, for example half of the top loop of an 8 in a 2008 penny...

Staff edit - not family friendly? I won't repeat that word, but what it has always meant to me is "some residue or junk on a coin", does it have another meaning I am not aware off?

Wow I've never seen a coin so scratched, can you see them with the naked eye? It really does look bad, sorry it happened to your coin. I'm amazed leather made those marks. Great photos by the way I'm very impressed.

Lesson learned I'd say.

...on the plus side, the camera seems to work well.

the "residue" was removed with steam. however the coin is toast. My friend actually offered to take it to New York, have the whole thing polished and even redo the burnishing.
I said no thanks, the coin would no longer be worth anything other then melt. Like altered stamps, I detest altered coins. So I will replace it myself.

The relevant word is a grey area, stampvirgin. Keep in mind, our standard for posting discourse is "would a conservative parent want their nine-year-old reading this?" That's because we have such members here. The word in question has differing connotations in differing social strata, and we will always err on the side of caution. No harm, no foul.

dave, are you referring to my earlier post?
Bobby sent me a link to the wiki article about it. I was, ah, a bit disgusted after learning it's more popular meaning. And determined that it was an wholly appropriate action. Hadn't even given it a second thought till a few minutes ago.

Yes, that's what I was referring to, and I'm sorry you had to learn about the other connotations at all.

I really like this USB camera, the only draw back is that it really can't take a good picture of an entire silver dollar. It is really meant for close up work. Half dollars and smaller show up great, and the built in led lights are impressive. The hardest thing is getting a good picture of a really shiny coin, the reflections are touchy. I am using a haphazard stand with a piece of black non-shiny, paper in the background to reduce light reflection. I am new to this so a learning process is required.

Don't forget, we have a dedicated Photography forum which is quite active. If you'd like, I'll be happy to move this thread there. It's fine here, as well, because of the commentary related to what happened to the coin.

I picked up one of those that is supposed to be 300X. However, I may never know since for about one year now I haven't opened the box. Not sure I could find enough stuff to look at with it. I'd like to have one with a vaiable power but then too, still would not get used. As to your coins being scratched. Lesson well learned. Never listen to people that don't know. Look at the brighter side. She could have suggested using a wire wheel.

Moved, per the OP's request. Stampvirgin, I saw what the forum software did to the word "please" - automatically parsed into a Glossary link - and brought it to the attention of the coders.
I can't really say I'm much a fan of USB microscopes. They have the "cheap" factor working for them, but not much else, and in the world of optics you get what you pay for.
