I reported a copper nickel plated pure nickel core, simply because that is what I found when I referred to my 2010 edition of Krause World coins. Otherwise, I would have to plead ignorance! To be honest, I am not really much smarter than the average numismatist! (Apologies to Yogi the Bear for the partial misquote! )

Given my test on a five schillings and your test I would say its safe to assume your magnetic coin is probably a fake. That said as a fake it is probably collectible in its own right.....

It seems that from all of the comments in this thread so far, the 2010 Krause World coins note for the Austrian 10 schillings is right. That is, the 1974 Austrian 10 schillings at least has a magnetic core, in this case, pure nickel.
I do not have a 1974 Austrian 10 schillings to test with a magnet, so I am unable to confirm this personally. I AM however, tempted to search through dealer's junk boxes to find one. Perhaps some other CCF member may have one to confirm, or can beat me in the hunt to find one.

Strange! I have a 1974 Austrian 10-Schilling that a friend of my father's brought back from a business trip that year and which has been in my collection ever since. I've just tested it with a magnet and there was no attraction.
