My avatar is a medal issued in 1992 by the city of Halifax and given to survivors of the December 6th, 1917 Halifax Explosion that were still alive. There were fewer than 100 issued (I have two and sold a third). Today marked the 96th anniversary of the disastor, which remains the world's biggest man made, non nuclear explosion on record. It destroyed a huge section of the city, killing 2,000 and injuring 9,000.

The medal is cast bronze plate and measures 32mm.

The Halifax explosion was the most powerful accidental in history. Wikipedia has some interesting information on it.
