At a local auction today I saw a Charles II 1676 (or is it 1678) English Crown. Sorry for the bad pictures, the auctioneer wouldn't let me take it out of the plastic pocket.
If it wasn't for the engraving on Charles II's head what would the grade be? Also what is an approximate value be for this coin.

The grade is less than good. With the engraving maybe poor.
There are a few varieties and all fairly rare.
Putting a price on it is difficult because I should imagine a collector of Ch 11 crowns would have deep pockets.

Hi Peter, when you say deep pockets, could you give a rough estimate? The estimate for the auction is $100-$200 Australian Dollars or 55-110 Pounds.

In this condition and with engraving, it isn't worth much more than two to three times melt value.

An interesting piece to have in a collection, but that's about it. I have a 1662 Charles 11 crown in not much better condition, with light graffiti.

I guess that it is a relatively cheap way of adding a very early large silver milled coin to your collection. That is why I acquired mine.

I would grade this piece almost VG and price well if I had it I would want around 150 GBP . I would be more interested in the engraving maybe a convict piece?.

A fairly problem free low grade. The estimate for the Aussie one looks about right.
(If you just want an example)
I would much rather have a nicer one but each to their own.

Never buy a coin the seller refuses to let you look at closely.

So, if this were in a slab, they should crack it before they auction it to you?

My Coin Yearbook 2011 list common dates at 140 pounds in Fine condition, lowest grade listed.

I would think this piece would be two grades below fine. The engraving damage certainly does NOT help with the value.

Perhaps 60 Pounds may secure it, but I personally would NOT like to pay more than that.
