Here is an AE 24 with what I believe to be Dionysus on the obverse. My first task in attributing these coins should be to master the art of reading and translating inscriptions - it seems like a fun and rewarding exercise. To identify tough-to-read characters I try to read the characters around it but I could use a jump start on this one. Thanks

Yes, it is Dionysos. It's from Thrace, and the word underneath (horizontal) spells out the city, Maroneia (it's equivalent in Greek). I'll let you sort out the rest-- will be easy when you check against the right references and pictures :)

Should be able to find this in wildwinds, or if not there, coinproject, vcoins, etc.

Here's the wildwinds page for Maroneia, Thrace: http://wildwinds.com/coins/greece/t...oneia/t.html

Nice coin

neat coin TJ! strong reverse legend.

sometimes when I'm trying to figure one out i'll plug in a keyword at vcoins (do advanced search and click "title and desription"), like plug in maroneia and or dionysos.
