Attachment. What do I have? Coin is just slightly larger than a penny, looks to be copper or bronze.

The coin is ancient Roman of the emperor Gallienus 253-268 AD, the reverse is a Hippocamp advancing right.

Denomination?

Value estimate?

The few coins of that era that I have seen are relatively inexpensive.

Denomination: antoninianus

Value: hard to say, depends on the selling venue and whim of the buyer. Also difficult to tell the condition with those fuzzy photos. My best guess is that is would sell for ~$15-30 USD on ebay, maybe more.

It's Gallienus, RIC 245 (or variant). Here's the wildwinds page for Gallienus. Scroll down to the RIC 245 entries. http://wildwinds.com/coins/ric/gallienus/i.html

Thanks very much. I am regularly impressed with both the amount of info out there, and with the knowledge in our member base. There was another coin, looked to be silver, about the size of a half dollar, but it didn't look right, at the estate sale where I bought this. It was three bucks, so I passed. I should have bought it, I think.

I paid four bucks for:
o a silver Mexico peso 1940,
o a silver 1/4 anna from India 1943
o this Roman coin
o Plus two 10 ore Sweden 1950 & 1953, silver

Not bad.
