Friends:

I am brand new to this forum. I just bought this coin. Yes I know it has problems (dents, dings, scratches). But I was hoping for opinions on whether it is genuine or fake. I read this is a common coin for counterfeiters (Chinese?) to make struck copies of. It weighs about what other large cents are supposed to weigh. It is the correct diameter. It has the same ring when I drop it. I can't imagine a coin this dinged up being a fake, but I wanted your all's expertise. Thanks!

to the CCF!

Not liking the position of the point of the curl. Does not seem to match any Newcomb? What EXACTLY does it weigh?

Looking in the Red Book the hair and beads look to be a dead match.

Amida17: My scale only goes to the nearest half of a gram. It comes in as 10.5 grams. (I know more precision would be desirable but I don't have that kind of scale yet.) BTW, Amida17, I was concerned about the width of the digit 1. Other certified examples had a wider 1 digit. Is this silly of me to worry about something like this?

jolson: It was part of a larger group of coins, a person's grandfather's drawer of coins, you know? So it's hard to say - maybe $40?

Will hold out for an accurate weight. But, I am thinking not genuine. Contemporary counterfeit perhaps but looks "off" to me. Hope for the buyer I am wrong....

Typing at the same time as you...lets wait to see what others think....

I do not like the look of the denticles either.

Even the numbers look right

The seven has a bulge at the top. So does the question photo. The 5 seems to match too. Maybe I've just been looking at it too long

vermontesium:

Could you be more specific about the numbers not looking right? I thought the width of the "1" was too thin compared to other similar authenticated coins. Since I'm new I'm trying to figure out what to look for...

It does not match any Newcomb...plain and simple. There are only 5 die marriages for this year. None of which show the curl point between 8 and 5.
@jolson...No offense but you cannot use the RedBook to attribute varieties or , for most, confirm authenticity.

edit: because I should proofread....

Maybe and maybe not real. Difficult to tell. One thing is there were two different types that year. A small date and a large date. This one appears to be the small date. However, there should have been a space between the 5 and the in the date and this one appears to be almost touching. The seven in the date too appears to be more slanted than a real one. For a coin that would sell in that grade for about $600 or more, I could see why it would be counterfeited if it is one.

Based on all of your comments, I'm convinced the coin is a fake. I'm going to send it back with the rest of the coins I bought in this batch and get a refund.

Thank you all!

That was an interesting read. Someone sure went through the trouble to give it believable patina/wear--but I understand the economics of it.

I think it's fake.

The marks on the rim come from casting I think.
