my first semuncia, a rupublican coin type that was equal to 1/24 of an as. only my second republican coin. I didn't even know the semuncia was a coin type when I purchased this, was drawn to the redish patina.   anonymous. 217-215 BC Æ semuncia o:head of Mercury right wearing petasos r prow of galley right; ROMA above. Cr38/7 22mm 6.1g

oh yeah, thanks pish...i was going to post a pic of a nice one to show the detials. the the 200 + usd version. one thing you can probably tell by the surfaces that wikipedia mentioned was that this was a cast coin...which I also didn't know.

Hey Chris well played, but I have to ask, did you realize it was cast when you picked it up? I don't own any RR cast coins, but I have considered purchasing the As denomination. I have seen quite a few at shows and online. This I have never seen. I really like how much of the ROMA on your reverse.

When I posted this one it didn't receive too much critical acclaim but these coins are fantastic in the flesh.  This is a RR bronze semis... so now I wonder if two semuncia possibly make one semis (cos I think mine is bigger and heavier but haven't got it handy to tell you the measurements)

oh wow, that one is a beauty DUK....i give it much acclaim, I must have missed it the first time around. thanks all...AN: I had no idea there were cast before I got it. it was cheap, so this was a buy now and learn later experience. not sure what happened to my obverse pic...photobucket mess up..

I just looked it up... 2 semis make an AS and therefore 12 semuncia make a semis :P
So they are stylistically similar (both with portrait, both with Roma on reverse and both with a prow of ship but the semis was worth a bit more.
